Another key advantage is that the smooth surface isn't recessed very far; if it's too recessed the bottom edge of your GPS screen might be obscured by the rim of the beanbag.
The bottom is nice and grippy and stays put well - and when you park your car, just lift the whole thing off your dash and hide it under the seat or in the glovebox - no tell-tale suction cup marks to tip off thieves.
